hey Knopf, can we get a better picture of Marai on the book jacket of The Rebels??

Knopf/Borzoi has done a superb job of bringing Marai to English so far, in every way except the choice of author photo! The one they used on Embers, Casanova and now apparently The Rebels makes poor Marai look terrible.

Might I suggest one of these, especially Marai as a young man, as he wrote The Rebels at age 30:

EDIT: WHOOPS! This young man is not Marai, but the Hungarian novelist poet Radnóti Miklós! Damn you, Google Images.

I agree about that photo- the man does look rather dour, esp when they say he suicided himself in 1989 or whenever it was.

Hy again! I agree with anonymus - yes - unbelievable friend of mine!

But I write because the young man on that picture is not Marai, it is on of the biggest Hungarian poet: Miklós Radnóti (or in Hungarian order: Radnóti Miklós). He was also one of the biggest people in the hungarian literature in the '30's but unfortunately he was killed be the nazis at the end of the second world war :((

From where did you take this photo? :)

Radnoti was a poet, not a novelist.

As well as getting a better photo, I think they should get a better typesetter. I was very disappointed to see Ernő (that's an o with a double accute accent) mis-typeset as Ernõ (o with a tilde). While I know this can happen on web-pages and documents created on PCs if the right font isn't used, it is inexcusable that such an error occurs in a published book. I found it very distracting.

Funny. I opened the Portraits of a Marriage for a review and thought to myself - oh no! not *that* photo again.

You can find many pictures of Marai in the very interesting and well documented bio written by Ernö Zeltner "Sandor Marai, Ein Leben in Bildern" published by Piper Verlag.
